Cross-Country Skiing in Eastern Tyrol

Exercise in the fresh air

A magnificent setting of snow-covered landscapes and perfectly groomed trails makes cross-country skiing a special experience!

Over 100 km of trails are available to "skaters" and classic cross-country skiers along the Lienz valley bottom and in neighboring valleys. Enjoy the gorgeous winter landscape of the Lienz Dolomites on a leisurely cross-country expedition, or take on the athletic challenges of the traditional "Dolomitenlauf" race.

The network of trails in the Lienz Dolomites

... begins on the southern outskirts of town and is the starting point for long-distance tours towards Carinthia, the Iseltal, or even South Tyrol. A flattish route leads circa 30 km in the direction of Carinthia and connects to the Drautal trail (Oberdrauburg).

The slightly uphill route towards Pustertal leads via Thal and Mittewald and connects to the Sillian-South Tyrol network of trails. The Iseltal trail via Oberlienz, Ainet, and St. Johann (ca. 30 km) takes you along the banks of the Isel and is not particularly tricky.

Trail on the Iselsberg and in Lavant

Cross-country skiing fans also find what they are looking for in the countryside surrounding Lienz: the 5 km long trail on the Iselsberg at an elevation of 1,200 m is very diverse and classified as intermediate. The unique view of the Lienz Dolomites is particularly delightful!

There is something very special about the 4 km loop trail close to the golf hotel in Lavant. It is equipped with snowmakers so there is never any lack of "the white stuff"!

All trails groomed for skating and classic technique.

Especially popular: the Biathlon Center in Obertilliach. An excellent network of trails and the shooting range provide a training center that's a hit with everyone, not just top athletes. With a bit of guidance and instruction, even our guests can show off some of their biathlon potential! And maybe you'll even run into Ole Einar Björndalen, who has relocated to Obertilliach.

Snowshoeing

Sports and nature

... combined in enjoyable ways. Put on your snowshoes and explore the snow-covered landscape of Eastern Tyrol; everyone can snowshoe, and we will be happy to help you find the tour that's right for you.

Snowshoeing under the full moon

Snowshoeing under the full moon is an unforgettable experience. The quiet and stillness of the night has an even greater effect amid the snowy landscapes of mountains and forests. Information about when the full moon takes place, and thus when the snowshoe hikes are offered, is available at Hotel Traube.

Let the scenery of the Hohe Tauern work its magic on you!

Snowshoeing through the national park

If you want to go on an expedition accompanied by an expert, then a tour through Hohe Tauern National Park with a park ranger will be perfect for you.

Every winter, you can participate in guided tours. You will learn a lot about the winter countryside and the animals that live there; a unique opportunity that you can experience during the day or at night.

Imagine fluffy, pristine snow surrounded by the stillness and solitude of nature. You will even be able to see the tracks of wild animals!

Winter vacation in Eastern Tyrol: weekly program, ice stock, ice skating, horse-drawn carriage rides

Our weekly program

We have added a group toboggan ride into our weekly program: we meet on Sundays at 3 pm in the hotel lobby and travel together to the Moosalm! This is where the tobogganing fun starts. The run drops over 2.5 km to Schloss Bruck!

Sledding on several natural toboggan runs, some floodlit, is an exciting experience for young and old...

Once again, this year's highlight is the Dolomite toboggan run in Tristach with a total length of ca. 7.5 km, the lower part of which is equipped with snow machines, guaranteeing fun with the family throughout the winter.

The Schlossberg toboggan run (ride up with the chairlift possible) and the Dolomite natural toboggan run Amlach/Leisach also offer plenty of enjoyment.

Ice stock

Numerous ice stock rinks in Lienz and surrounding areas invite you to enjoy a fun game of ice stock. This old, popular sport - similar to curling - is even more charming on floodlit lanes after dark.

Horse-drawn carriage rides

What could be more romantic than a carriage ride through the snow-covered valley basin of Lienz, all wrapped up in a warm blanket?

The "Osttirodler" on the Hochstein

The newest highlight in the region is the most spectacular Alpine Coaster in the Alps. This year-round ride runs for over 2.7 km from the Moosalm over the Schlossberg. Pure adrenaline is guaranteed with numerous steep turns, waves, jumps, and even three roundabouts. Hop on the longest and most spectacular Alpine Coaster the world has ever seen.

There is also a floodlit toboggan run on the Kirchbichl in Lavant, which is especially fun for children.

In addition, the toboggan runs from the Lugger Alm to Gasthof Schöne Aussicht on the Iselsberg as well as the Gödnach family toboggan run (Dölsach) are already open!

Ice skating during your winter vacation in the Dolomites

When you go ice skating, you can look forward to all kinds of fun and healthy exercise out in the fresh air. Practice your pirouettes and have a great time on the ice!

The manmade ice rink on the Pustertalerstrasse is open! And if you don't have any ice skates of your own, you can rent a pair on-site! Opening times: Monday to Friday: 9am - 5pm, Saturday, and Sunday: 10am - 6pm

The Tristachersee natural ice rink is a special attraction! The lake is already ready for ice skating! You can reach the Tristachersee via Amlach or Tristach by car or ski bus.

There are also various ice skating rinks in the communities around Lienz!
